The basic building blocks for developing a framework for transforming business strategy into IT Architecture are:
A. The elements of business strategy:
- The expression of business strategy, as a synthesis of your vision
- The business goals
- Investment themes: strategic buckets from which money will be invested
- The Objectives and Key Results (OKR): express what you measure to meet these business goals.
B. The decomposition function from the corporate strategy to the domain strategy
- Corporate Strategy translation into a Business Domain strategy
- Business capability map: to pinpoint where the transformation will occur
- The Projects and Programs that are building blocks of the investment themes
- Roles: Enterprise Architects and Transformation Leads
C. The transformation function from the domain strategy to the IT Strategy
- Business software implementing the system supporting the business function (defined within the business capability map)
- The supporting IT for IT systems, which are systems in the IT domain such as CI/CD pipeline, monitoring, backup, cybersecurity, etc.
- Physical infrastructure (cloud, hosting, machines, etc.)
- Technology Strategy, expressed by the Chief Technology Officer or Chief Architect
- The Roadmaps: express the construction path and dependencies
- Roles: IT Architects, Lead Engineers
There are other things to consider like how everything fits together, the journey, the implementation, metrics collection, setting dashboards, etc. This is what I define in the AMASE Business methodology (amase.io)
